HCU Coaching: A Comprehensive Guide for the Modern SEO Landscape

What is the C-I-D-D HCU Content Framework?

The C-I-D-D framework is the practical core of HCU Coaching, providing a clear, actionable methodology for dealing with existing content that may be dragging down your site’s quality score. It helps you systematically categorize every piece of content on your site based on its value, relevance, and performance under the Helpful Content System.

C: Consolidate

  • Goal: Merge the value and topical relevance of multiple similar, thin, or low-performing pages into a single, comprehensive, and high-quality “pillar” page.
  • When to Use It: You have 3-5 pages targeting closely related keywords, but none offer a complete answer individually (e.g., three separate short articles on different types of H2O filters).
  • Action:
    1. Select the best page to be the central authority (the pillar).
    2. Extract the unique, high-quality information from the weaker pages.
    3. Delete the weaker pages and set up a 301 redirect from them to the new, consolidated pillar page. This transfers any remaining link equity.

I: Improve

  • Goal: Transform content that is almost helpful into genuinely people-first content that demonstrates strong E-E-A-T.
  • When to Use It: The content targets the right keyword and has decent traffic, but the dwell time is low or the bounce rate is high. The content is thin, lacks unique experience, or is outdated.
  • Action:
    1. Add E-E-A-T: Include original data, case studies, high-quality images of the product/topic in use, and an expert author bio.
    2. Increase Depth: Expand to answer the user’s “next logical question.”
    3. Optimize UX: Break up walls of text, use subheadings, lists, and clear calls to action (CTAs).

D: De-index (Noindex)

  • Goal: Remove a page from Google’s index without deleting the page entirely, preserving its utility for existing users or internal teams.
  • When to Use It: Pages that are necessary for site function but offer zero value to a search engine user (e.g., login pages, archived old policies, internal thank you pages, or drafts).
  • Action: Apply the noindex tag to the page (via robots meta tag or HTTP header). This signals to search engines to crawl the page but not include it in search results.

D: Delete (and Redirect)

  • Goal: Completely remove content that is severely unhelpful, outdated, or off-topic, and ensure all existing links (internal and external) are managed.
  • When to Use It: Content that is low-quality, extremely thin, actively harmful (inaccurate), or about a product/service you no longer offer. It is a severe liability under the HCS.
  • Action:
    1. Completely delete the page and its associated files.
    2. Implement a 301 redirect to the most topically relevant remaining page on your site (e.g., delete a page about “old software feature X” and redirect it to the “software overview” page). Do not redirect to the homepage unless no relevant page exists.

📝 HCU Content Audit Template

You can use a spreadsheet with the following columns to execute your audit systematically.

Column Example Data Why it Matters (HCU Focus) C-I-D-D Decision Next Steps
URL /blog/low-quality-topic N/A D (Delete) Redirect 301 to /services/main-service/
Primary Keyword “best widgets 2022” Indicates outdated content needs a refresh. I (Improve) Update to “best widgets 2025” and add current pricing.
Traffic (Last 90 Days) 10 Low traffic often signals low relevance or quality. C (Consolidate) Merge with the main “widget guide” page.
Bounce Rate 95% A key indicator of user dissatisfaction (unhelpful content). I (Improve) Add more detailed steps and a video tutorial.
Content Type/Topic Short “What Is X” Definition Often too thin; needs expansion. C (Consolidate) Merge into the Glossary or a detailed Beginner’s Guide.
E-E-A-T Score (Your internal rating) Low (No Author) Missing critical trust/authority signals. I (Improve) Assign an expert author and include their bio/credentials.
HCU Risk Score (1-5, 5=High Risk) 4 Your internal assessment of how likely Google is to flag it. D (De-index) Use noindex tag. Internal resource only.
