Generative Search Strategy
AEO audit checklist: Optimising for AI overviews
Is your content being cited by Gemini, Perplexity, and SearchGPT? Use this forensic checklist to verify your AEO readiness.
The shift from SERPs to LLM responses
In 2026, the traditional “blue link” is no longer the final destination. Large Language Models (LLMs) are now the primary interface for complex, conversational queries. Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the forensic process of architecting your data so it is not just “crawled” by a bot, but understood, synthesised, and cited by AI agents as a primary source of truth.
This requires a departure from keyword-stuffing toward Entity-Based SEO. AI doesn’t just look for strings of text; it looks for verified facts, expert perspectives, and data points that it can confidently present to a user in a zero-click environment.
Machine readability
We go beyond standard HTML. We optimise syntax, nested schema, and JSON-LD accessibility to ensure LLMs parse your core insights without interpretive friction.
Entity trust
By connecting your brand to verified Knowledge Graph nodes, we move you from an “unknown site” to a “verified entity” cited in AI Overviews.
The 2026 AEO Forensic Checklist
To survive the transition to generative search, your content must satisfy both NLP (Natural Language Processing) logic and N.E.E.A.T. (Notable Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) standards.
- ✔ Direct Answer Blocks: Lead with a clear “What is” or “How to” statement (50-60 words) immediately following the H1 or H2. Use bolding on the primary answer to aid AI extraction.
- ✔ Semantic Structure: Phrase headers as natural language questions. If users ask Gemini “How do I audit AEO?”, your H2 should match that specific phrasing.
- ✔ Citation Strength: Are your insights backed by outbound links to .gov, .edu, or verified industry leaders? LLMs reward content that provides a “verifiable path” for its assertions.
- ✔ Nested Schema Graph: Don’t just use basic Article schema. Use
mainEntityOfPage, mentions, andSameAsto explicitly link your brand to external authority markers. - ✔ Technical Accessibility: Ensure your site’s API or text-only version is lightweight. AI agents prefer clean, unencumbered data over heavy, script-laden layouts.
Applying AEO to the CIDD framework
In my C.I.D.D. HCU Content Framework, AEO falls under Data Architecture. We aren’t just writing for people; we are architecting for the systems that answer people’s questions.
The Forensic AEO Workflow:
- Audit: Identify which of your pages currently appear in “People Also Ask” or AI snippets.
- Refine: Rewrite lead paragraphs to satisfy “Direct Answer” NLP requirements.
- Graph: Implement Organization and Person schema to build “Notable Expertise.”
- Verify: Use LLM-testing tools to see if AI agents can accurately summarise your page.
